The Songaminute Man

I recently wrote an arrangement for The Songaminute Man a.k.a. Teddy Mac, recorded with The Guy Barker Big Band and 80-year-old Teddy himself on vocals.

Teddy has dementia, and music -which has been a significant part of his life – has helped him throughout his illness. His story is inspirational, and it has been an honour to be involved.

Teddy’s single raises awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Society and you’ll be doing your bit for a good cause if you buy it. Have a listen here:

Quincy Jones Prom & Metropole Orkest

The Metropole Orkest, one of the finest studio orchestras in the world, recently commissioned Callum to transcribe Count Basie’s “I Can’t Stop Loving You” for them to play at the Quincy Jones Prom 2016. Here’s the video:

Callum was recently commissioned to write two arrangements (‘Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby’ and ‘Jeepers Creepers’) for the BBC Big Band and Joe Stilgoe for the programme Friday Night is Music Night. for Friday night is music night.

The Callum Au Big Band at Ronnie Scott’s

Top flight trombonist and arranger Callum Au brings his mighty band, teeming with the UK’s best players, to Ronnie Scott’s this Sunday 10th April. The concert will feature stunning arrangements of Bernstein’s famous musical West Side Story, set in six movements and featuring guest vocalists. The full lineup is TBC.

Jazz is Bach

Thanks to Ksenija Sidorova and the Latvian Radio Big Band for another fantastic performance of my jazz arrangement of the Bach D Minor Concerto.

I am looking forward to working with these guys again in the next few months on some more classical-jazz collaborations, so stay tuned…

A Latvian Christmas

Callum was honoured to direct the Latvian Radio Big Band tonight, in their outstanding première performance of his arrangement of the Bach D Minor Keyboard Concerto for big band and solo accordion.

Congratulations to the band and to fantastic soloist, Ksenija Sidorova, for a brilliant concert. Callum thoroughly enjoyed the experience and looks forward to collaborating with the Big Band in the future.

Hollywood Romance @ Pizza Express

Following the success of ‘Close To You’, Matt Skelton has devised an entirely original project bringing together the same ensemble in collaboration with multi award-winning, celebrated jazz singer and broadcaster Claire Martin OBE. Claire has been described by Jazz Times USA as “among the four or five finest female jazz vocalists on the planet”. Hollywood Romance’ celebrates the art and setting of popular song from the golden age of Hollywood. Expect to hear elegant, swinging settings of songs arranged by Callum Au and inspired by the legendary Songbook recordings of Ella Fitzgerald, Anita O’Day and Sarah Vaughan. The programme’s highlight is a collection of songs from the Shirley Horn/Johnny Mandel Grammy award-winning masterpiece ‘Here’s To Life’, which have been orchestrated especially by Tommy Laurence.
